A British manor. A strange family. A generous financial offer to babysit that one girl just cannot refuse. I have to be honest; I wasn't expecting this movie to be as good as it was. I don't know whether it was the reviews that I read that swayed my opinion or just a fear that it would suck. So I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be engrossing, chilling, and original. The doll sub-genre of horror as we all know has been done before (Chucky, Annabelle etc). So I was interested to see what 'The Boy' would do differently. The horror genre is in dire need of fresh concepts. The main point of intrigue for most of the movie was the creepy fact that the family see the doll as a real boy. That in itself is eerie. Then the movie explores the backstory and we begin to connect the dots. Actress Lauren Cohan takes the leading role of Greta. Although most will recognise her from the insanely popular hit TV show 'The Walking Dead'. Here, she has a slightly easier time than fighting off zombies on a daily basis. That is until things get scary fast! Lauren Cohan has clearly come into her own and proves she is a multi-talented actress whose abilities go further than playing Maggie in TWD. I am eager to see what other horror roles she takes. Because while her acting was impressive and realistic, I believe we haven't seen the best of her yet. Despite Lauren stealing the spotlight with her terrific performance, we do have a few other gifted actors that help bring the movie to life. We have a charming, British man who fills Greta in on the true family history. He is the eye candy for the ladies and gays, although we do sense he genuinely cares for Greta and doesn't just want to get in her pants. And not forgetting the odd parents of the doll, who believe and act as though he is real. They are wound too tight and have clearly lost their grip with reality. Whenever they were on the screen I immediately became tense. Overall, an impressive flick. We have a chilling backstory and unnerving moments that reach terrifying as we close in on the ending. A fast pace, fascinating characters, and a horrifying twist that I did not see coming. A twist that explains answers all our questions. The location portrays an accurate British countryside. Although not all homes are quite as impressive. If it weren't for the creepy doll I would love to live there I suggest you rent or grab a copy of this movie. Well, Netflix really pulled out all the stops with this one! This is a sensational horror series and I deeply hope it gets recommissioned for a second season. The soundtrack they use has an eighties vibe, provoking a feeling of nostalgia and taking us back to an 80's horror and sci-fi show. It has a sprinkle of super-8, x-files, classic American horror movies, and a dash of suspense. The cover for the show is delightfully vintage that is reminiscent of Star Wars artwork. 'Stranger Things' is set in an eighties America; Indiana to be precise. Then, we have Winona Ryder. And wow. This lady has proved she is still a relevant and incredibly talented actress. Due to personal circumstances, it appeared that she was shunned by Hollywood and has really fought to prove her worth. This show has certainly achieved that. She plays the grieving mother of a boy who goes missing. She plays the role with such realness and pure emotion that we the viewer, cannot help but get attached to her character's situation. She brings realism, desperation, and just a hint of crazy to the character. Hats off to you Winona, superb performances. Side note: this woman just doesn't age! Yet it wasn't just Winona whose acting was sensational, all of the cast were fantastic. The cop with a difficult past. The older son with a skill for photography. And the children. This pleased me a great deal. Sometimes child actor's performances can be cheesy and over-the-top, even in Hollywood movies with an almost unlimited budget for casting. Not here, though. We have a variety of believable character types that we can all relate with, that are caught up in school drama such as bullying, sex, and peer pressure. The main four children are terrific; their bond is incredible, adorable, and comical. We adore these children and sympathize with their high school existence, excitedly observe their thrilling journeys, and eagerly follow their investigations to find their missing friend. Especially when they make a new friend with a special talent.... Shocker, it is actually creepy. The antagonist in this show is genuinely creepy. This by itself is impressive. As I watch a great deal of horror I find it takes a lot to scare me. However, this show somehow managed to do just that. The creature is both chilling and enticing. Its motive and agenda is unclear for the longest time, making it all the more frightening. On top of all this, there is some kind of a science corporation performing experiments of various sorts. We are shown this little by little, building our curiosity as to what they are actually doing. Does it have anything to do with the missing kid? Or their new friend? Or the creature on the loose? Are they responsible for all of it? Or none of it? So, as you can probably glean, there is a great deal happening throughout the show. There is never a dull moment. The series takes you through a whirlwind of emotions. I am fairly certain this will become a classic horror series. 'Stranger Things' is expertly crafted, lovingly produced, intelligently and enticingly filmed, and passionately directed. It pays homage to eighties horror and sci-fi, taking us back to a simpler yet more interesting time in society. This series proves that originality isn't dead. Well done to all who were involved in the making of this excellent marvel of horror. So, need a slice of horror? A piece of sci-fi? A chunk of nostalgia? Add this to your Netflix to-watch list right now! 1) The Girl in The Photographs Colleen's life isn't going anywhere. We adore horror, but it goes hand in hand with blood & guts. Here are 5 gory, gross, and excellent horror movies on Netflix. CAUTION: AVOID EATING WHILST WATCHING THESE MOVIES. 1) Cabin Fever. Any and all of the movies. It has recently been remade, but the third one is on Netflix right now! Cabin Fever: Patient Zero. It is great. When a group of friends enjoying a bachelor cruise in the Caribbean stumble upon a research facility on a remote island, a deadly virus is unleashed. The group must find a way to survive before the flesh eating virus consumes them all. 2) Contracted. Both movies are on Netflix right now. They aren't just great movies, but as promised, unbelievably gory. Even I, who watch horror several times a week, was cringing. Basically the movies centre around a sexually transmitted decease. But the only side effects aren't just itching and rashes. The side effects of this STD are far worse. There will be a third movie, which I cannot wait for. I urge you to watch these while they are available. 3) Day Of The Dead. A classic! This sequel to Dawn of the Dead is even gorier than the first two "Dead" films. The location is an underground government installation in sunny Florida, the purpose of which is to research the phenomenon causing the dead to come back to life. I know sequels in the horror field can be an iffy subject, most aren't for them. But in this case, I adored it. Some sequels extend and build on the story, and don't just poorly mimic the original in an attempt to make more money. This was a superb sequel stemming from a classic, and also being a classic. 4) Human Centipede. All three movies. If you can handle it. Seriously. They are gory, but mainly gross as hell. It plays on a morbid fascination of some human beings, mainly horror fans. Each movie taking a look at a twisted individual attempting to make a human centipede. The obsession growing mentally, and....physically. 5) Wolf Creek 2. Both are incredible, but I believe only the second is currently on Netflix. You may be lucky and find them both on there. You don't need to see the first to appreciate the second. Each movie revolves around a crazy Australian man with no boundaries. From manhood being chopped off, to general torture, this will have you gagging! Hats off to the man who plays the killer. Fantastic acting! CAUTION: SOME READERS MAY FIND THE CONTENT OFFENSIVE!
